A Measurement of the Air Fluorescence Yield
نویسندگان
چکیده
We measured the air uorescence yield as a function of pressure with electrons between 1.4 MeV and 1000 MeV by means of a 90 Sr source and an electron beam. Results indicate that the uorescence yield is proportional to electron energy loss from 1.4 MeV to 1000 MeV. The dE dx relativistic rise in air is detected. We describe the pressure temperature dependency of air uorescence by a formula derived from simple kinetic theory. With the aid of the 1966 US Mid-latitude Standard Atmospheric Model, we calculate the altitude dependence of uorescence yield of an 80 MeV electron which demonstrates how this measurement could improve the longitudinal particle density prole determination of extensive air showers (EAS) observed by detectors such as the High Resolution Fly's Eye and the Telescope Array.

A Measurement of the Fluorescence Efficiency of Air F.Kakimoto,
Air fluorescence in the region 310 nm to 400 nm is due to nitrogen fluorescence. [1] We measured the nitrogen fluorescence yield in air as a function of pressure between 1.4 MeV and 1 GeV by means of a strontium â source and an electron beam. The pressure dependency of nitrogen fluorescence is well described by a formula derived from simple kinetic theory. Results indicate that nitrogen fluores...

A key assumption in the reconstruction of extensive air showers using the air fluorescence technique is the hypothesis that fluorescence is proportional to energy deposition at all depths in the shower. This ansatz, along with the supposition that particle distribution and energy loss can be well modeled by modern shower simulation software, must be thoroughly verified in order to validate the ...

Most of the Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray (UHECR) experiments and projects (HiRes, AUGER, TA, EUSO, TUS,...) use air fluorescence to detect and measure extensive air showers (EAS). The precise knowledge of the Fluorescence Light Yield (FLY) is of paramount importance for the reconstruction of UHECR. The MACFLY Measurement of Air Cherenkov and Fluorescence Light Yield experiment has been designed...

For the calorimetric determination of the primary energy of extensive air showers, measured by fluorescence telescopes, a precise knowledge of the conversion factor (fluorescence yield) between the deposited energy in the atmosphere and the number of emitted fluorescence photons is essential. The fluorescence yield depends on the pressure and the temperature of the air as well as on the water v...
متن کاملFluorescence emission induced by extensive air showers in dependence on atmospheric conditions
Charged particles of extensive air showers (EAS), mainly electrons and positrons, initiate the emission of fluorescence light in the Earth’s atmosphere. This light provides a calorimetric measurement of the energy of cosmic rays. For reconstructing the primary energy from an observed light track of an EAS, the fluorescence yield in air has to be known in dependence on atmospheric conditions, li...

For most of the Ultra-High-Energy-Cosmic-Ray (UHECR) experiments and projects (HiRes, AUGER, TA, JEM-EUSO, TUS,...), the detection technique of Extensive Air Showers is based, at least, on the measurement of the air-fluorescence-induced signal. The knowledge of the Fluorescence-Light Yield (FLY) is of paramount importance for the UHECR energy reconstruction. The MACFLY experiment was designed t...
